In love with Makamat

The love for musical maqams has its roots in the East, be it in Arab, Turkish or Persian regions. Maqam is a sequence of notes according to several meters and guaranteed melody analysis rules. These maqams are distinguished by their improvisational character, as each melody can be tuned and played without preparation and decoration. To bring this original art to life, the Barzakh Cultural Center is presenting “Hearing: Maqamat and Virtues” at 20:30 next Tuesday. Al-Samia will hear selected references from many muwashahats and poems, as well as songs and duties written by Syed Darwish, Abdel-Wahhab, Zakaria Ahmed, and some forms of Turkish music. Artist Firas Andari (pictured) will sing and play the oud, accompanied by artist Hashem Abdel Kader (vocals) and Magdi Zein El-Din (drums).
