Russia’s Mir expands into Turkey

Moscow and Ankara have agreed to expand the use of Russian “Mir” bank cards in Turkey, as the devices will be installed in Turkish hotels to receive payments using these cards.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak announced that hotels in Turkey will install devices that will allow tourists from Russia to use a Russian “Mir” bank card.

The Russian official said: “We have discussed with Turkish partners the possibility of paying in Russian rubles or Turkish lira and operating Mir cards in hotels in the Republic of Turkey, and we have agreed to accept the (Turkish ) bank these (Mir) cards. We also agreed to create conditions for installing devices in hotels for the use of Mirs. (Mir) card ”.

The Russian deputy prime minister also indicated that the issue of accepting “Mir” cards in stores is being discussed.

Currently, there are 3 banks in Turkey that accept Mir cards: Is Bankasi, Ziraat Bankasi and Vakifbank.

Mir is a Russian bank card that operates through a national payment system. It was launched in 2015 after some Russian banks faced problems with Visa and MasterCard due to sanctions imposed in the West against Moscow.

Today, it is possible to pay for products or services or withdraw money from ATMs in countries such as Turkey, Vietnam, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, South Ossetia, and Abkhazia.
