MOSCOW (AP) — Ukraine needs to remove sea mines near its ports to ensure safe shipping, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.
A transcript from the Kremlin said Putin made the announcement in a phone call with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer on Friday. The report noted that Putin and Nehammer had “extensive exchanges of views on food security issues”, while Putin denied Western claims that Russia’s actions were exacerbating the global food crisis.

“Putin stressed that attempts to accuse Russia of difficulties in the supply of agricultural products to world markets are futile,” the Kremlin said. They added that the Russian leader “made a detailed statement on the true origins of the problems, especially arising from the US and EU sanctions against Russia”.
The United States and other Western allies rejected Russia’s request to lift sanctions and accused Moscow of blocking Ukraine’s grain supply to global markets, allegations denied by the Kremlin.
