Iberdola announces another 1,500 million euros of investment in Portugal

The Spanish Iberdrola announced this Monday, in Ribeira de Pena, another investment of 1,500 million in Portugal in wind farms, photovoltaic plants and green hydrogen, the latter described as “more important” by the Prime Minister.

In the coming years we can even double the investments made in this gigabattery, reaching up to 3,000 million euros of investment in Portugal”, said Ignacio Galán, Chairman of Iberdrola.

Inside the Gouvães tunnel, in Ribeira de Pena, Vila Real district, the inauguration ceremony of the Tâmega Electro-Production System (STE), the so-called Tâmega gigabattery, was held, which includes three hydroelectric plants and three dams that represented a investment of 1,500 million euros

Ignacio Galán said that the new Spanish hydroelectric projects are related to wind farms, solar plants, in the Tâmega and other regions of the country, with 3,000 megawatts (MW).

“In addition, we already have land for the production and export of green industrial products from green hydrogen,” he said.

And this is, for the President of the Government, António Costa, good news for the country.

António Costa says that Portugal has no time to lose in the fight against climate change

What the Chairman of Iberdrola has announced here is extremely important. It is that with renewable energies we can produce green hydrogen at a lower cost and with green hydrogen at a lower cost we can also produce other productions that become green because they will be produced based on green hydrogen”, said the head of the Government, who at this inauguration He was accompanied by the Minister of the Environment, Duarte Cordeiro.

And, referring to the president of Iberdrola, he continued: “I did not want to reveal everything and I will respect the secret, but it is great news for our country.”

Portugal will have, he stressed, “not only more renewable energy, more green hydrogen, more production of industrial products of the greatest importance also produced based on green energy”, considering that “Portugal has excellent conditions to be a large producer of green hydrogen“.
