Rio Maior invests 2.1 million euros with PRR support in student residence

The municipality of Rio Maior (Santarém) will invest €2.1 million in the transformation of two buildings in the historic center into a residence for 62 studentswith 92.24% financing from the Recovery and Resilience Program (PRR).

In a statement, the City Council of Rio Maior reports that the PRR request was approved and that the student residence, located in two residential buildings in the historic center, will be operational by the end of 2023.

The project will enhance the attractiveness of higher education in Rio Maior (where the Escola Superior de Desporto, of the Polytechnic Institute of Santarém, is located), the economic and social development of the municipality and the promotion of the central area of ​​the city.

For the mayor, Filipe Santana Dias (PSD), the project, “long-sought”reinforces the “investment policy in attracting students to higher education, an important stimulus for the development of the region”.

The total value of the project is 2,153,668 eurosbeing the financing of the PRR 92.24%in the value of €1,986,600advance the note.

The new student residence will have 31 double roomssocial and administrative areas, as well as technical and equipment areas, he adds.

At the same time, the student residence of the Escola Superior de Desporto de Rio Maior (ESDRM) is being built, which will have 57 rooms, 43 of which are doubles and 14 singlesbeing two adapted for people with reduced mobility (with capacity to accommodate 100 students).

With a budget close to 2 million euros, the ESDRM student residence, planned in the building built from scratch and which housed the school in 2013, should also be finished by the end of 2023.

ESDRM currently has 1,100 students and about 80% (around 850) come from other regions of the countryaccording to data from the Polytechnic Institute of Santarém.
