Heat drives electricity use to new daily record in July on fifth-hottest day

Electricity consumption in Portugal increased by 7.2% in July compared to the same month of the previous year, driven by temperatures above normal values. According to REN (National Energy Networks), on the 13th, Wednesday, even the highest daily consumption ever recorded in Portugal in the summer period was recorded, 163.5 GWh, exceeding the previous maximum, recorded in 2010. July 13 was considered the fifth hottest day in history with temperatures of 46.3 °C and 46.2 °C recorded at the Lousã and Santarém stations.

Adjusting for the effects of temperature and the number of working days, year-on-year growth was 4.9%.

In the first seven months of the year, consumption grew by 3.5%, compared to the same period of the previous year, or 3.3% corrected for temperature and business days.

Natural gas production supplied 32% of consumption while the remaining 22% corresponded to imported energy. In addition to the sharp drop in hydroelectric generation due to the drought, the wind regime has also been below average values. In the opposite direction, photovoltaic production evolved.
