Vodafone will raise prices in Spain according to inflation. In Portugal “it is not possible to anticipate” any change

In Spain, the rise in prices of the telecommunications operator Vodafone will be in line with the evolution of the consumer price index (CPI). The news was advanced by the Spanish newspaper Expansión, citing company sources.

According to Expansión, this will be a way for the operator to automatically update prices, “in a predictable and completely transparent way for customers”. This is, in fact, a practice that the operator already follows in other markets, such as the United Kingdom.

The Spanish newspaper specifies that the calculation will be based on the evolution of the consumer price index from October of the previous year to September of the current year. It is indicated that the company will include this price evolution clause according to inflation in new contracts and that communication to existing customers in the Spanish market will take place in the coming weeks. The new model will be implemented in the first quarter of 2023, the newspaper quotes.

For Portugal, the company does not yet anticipate changes. Contacted by The Observer, official source of Vodafone Portugal, she explains that “To date, it is not possible to anticipate the expression or timing of any price change” for the Portuguese market.

“The sector is strongly impacted by inflation, in particular by the costs of energy and fuel, as well as by disturbances in logistics chains and the consequent increase in prices and delivery times of equipment,” the company indicates. . “This increase in costs has an added impact at a time when Vodafone is developing multiple network modernization plans It is implementation of the 5G coverage obligation plan.”

In total, Vodafone Portugal invested 133.2 million euros in the 5G auction in Portugal, which ended in October 2021. The auction’s coverage obligations dictate that operators with 5G licenses must ensure coverage by 2025 of more than 95% of the entire population of the country, for example.

“The expressive rate of inflation to which we have been subject has put Vodafone andenormous internal challenges to prevent these impacts from being reflected in the prices of services. However, this is an effort. not compatible with the expression of the inflation rate or with its medium-long term nature”, adds an official source from the company.

Like the rest of the operators, Vodafone Portugal has also communicated to the market that it is following the evolution of inflation.

According to the quick estimate, released this Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), inflation in August reached 9%, a slight slowdown compared to 9.1% in July. Since September 2021, monthly annual inflation has been on the rise.
