A free parking with capacity for 697 vehicles opened this Monday near the Santo André Hospital, in Leiria, the City Council announced.
In a press release, the municipality explained that the Olhalvas temporary park “responds to the high pressure registered in that area.”
Located on Rua de Santo André, this park occupies an area of 18,000 square meters and can be used for access to the city, also assuming great importance for users of the Leiria Hospital Center, which is a five-minute walk away. . ”.

According to the Chamber, “with the work carried out in the Hospital Center, which reduces the supply of places in its own parks, a significant increase in parking demand is expected in its surroundings and consequent road limitations, which the Municipality prevents with the availability of this park”.
Quoted in the same note, the mayor, Gonçalo Lopes, stressed that the investment is part of a strategy that includes Structuring interventions in highways and nuclear arteries in the municipality, but also a commitment to interventions with an immediate impact on improving mobility conditions.
We will continue to expand the offer of car parks, especially in peripheral areas of the city, in order to promote more sustainable mobility models and, consequently, reduce the volume of traffic in the city center and reduce polluting emissions”, he stated. .

On February 8, the Chamber of Leiria revealed that it would build a temporary parking lot with a capacity for 625 vehicles, close to the Santo André Hospital, to guarantee supply during the works to expand the parking lot of the health unit.
At the meeting of the municipal executive, councilman Carlos Palheira, responsible, among others, for the Management and Requalification of Public Space, mentioned that it is a “support parking bag” to the hospital.
Foreseeing a significant increase in the demand for car parks in the surroundings of the Santo André Hospital and the consequent road limitations, the municipality agreed with the owner of three plots of land to establish onerous surface rights, by paying two thousand euros per month for a period of two years,” the municipality said at the time.
With the investment, “it is also intended to eliminate situations of possible abuse and minimize the impact of the difficulty of long-term parking in local businesses and services”, the Chamber highlighted.
