Next month, the Japanese government will discuss the future of the industry with car companies.

Japanese news agency Kyodo quoted Industry Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura as saying he was looking forward to a meeting next month between the government and automakers to discuss the future of the industry. According to Kyodo, Nishimura told reporters in California on Saturday, where he visited Toyota Motor Corp. research centers, that “the auto industry is entering a period of great transformation.”

The Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry visited the United States to participate in trade negotiations on the Indo-Pacific Economic Mechanism led by the United States. “We would like to discuss the early introduction of autonomous driving and measures for its widespread use,” said Nishimura. The agenda of the meeting, which will be joined by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, relevant ministers and automakers, will include the role of the automotive industry in a carbon-neutral society.
