The Police demonstrate this Wednesday in Lisbon against the dragging of the problems that affect PSP

Protest action of the Union Association of Police Professionals (ASPP/PSP) carried out before parliament for decent wages, improvements in working conditions and respect for the police condition, Lisbon, October 11, 2022. MANUEL DE ALMEIDA/ LUSA

The Union Association of Police Professionals (ASPP/PSP) is holding a demonstration this Thursday in Lisbon against the dragging of the problems that affect the PSP and the police and against the “the lack of political will of the government to fix them.”

The Independent Police Union (SIAP) has already announced that it will join the protest, which will take place starting at 5:00 p.m. between Largo de Camões and the Assembly of the Republic.

Among the problems are low wages, police aging and work overloadwhat makes the career unattractive, lack of personnel, operational incapacity, health and early retirement, according to the ASPP.

The ASPP called on the population to support the police in the demonstration and opposed the intention of any party to instrumentalize the protest.

After Chega announced that he would be present at the demonstration, the ASPP affirmed “its independence from any political party” and said that “does not accept that any political party intends to instrumentalizethe demonstration “under pain of disrespecting the PSP professionals themselves.”

The largest union of the Public Security Police justifies the demonstration “because the PSP maintains and exacerbates structural problems every day, which put the stability and functioning of the institution itself at risk, tramples on the rights of professionals and harms the population” .

The ASPP also alleges that the Government “does not give guarantees that it intends to change the course of security policies and it does not intend to dignify these professionals, basing their intervention on irresponsible campaigns and advertisements”.

“Citizens should know that, when there is no one to answer them, the fault lies not with the PSP professionals, but with the fans of the Government,” says the ASPP.

The PSP’s Lisbon Metropolitan Command (Cometlis) has already indicated that due to the demonstration there will be traffic restrictions on Thursday, with parking bans on the streets of São Bento and Correia Garção and Calçada da Estrela starting Thursday.
