Green hydrogen. What is missing to jump off the paper

Inauguration of the largest hydrogen plant

Green hydrogen is the new buzzword in renewable energy. It is considered the solution to decarbonise those sectors for which electrification is not the answer: industry, particularly industries that use heat, and transport. Hydrogen can also help stabilize the injection of renewable flows into electricity grids, as it manages to absorb excess production and provide some storage. And it promises, in these times of insecurity in access to gas and oil, some energy independence for countries that do not produce fossil fuels.

This is the case of Portugal, which has an asset in this game: the geographical and climatic conditions to produce cheap renewable energy. This is a key piece for the green hydrogen equation to work. But it is far from enough, and even the most enthusiastic developers are frustrated by the many uncertainties holding back the billion projects.

These signs were evident in a debate promoted on the last day of APREN (Association of Renewable Companies), which took place in Lisbon on November 16 and 17 and brought together representatives of EDP, Galp, Efacec, Smart Energy, Madoqua Renewables (who has another great project for Sines) and the specialist Nuno Ribeiro da Silva. The president of Endesa Portugal (whose statements about the cost of the Iberian mechanism provoked a strong reaction from the Government, a controversy on which the manager still does not want to comment) brought up the experience of the past development of other renewable technologies for debate.
