Catarina Martins says that “what was necessary was not learned” with the 2008 crisis

The coordinator of the BE, Catarina Martins, defended this Thursday that “we did not learn what had to be learned” with the financial crisis of 2008 and considered it urgent “to have a strong regulation of the financial system.”

“We call attention to the following: the financial system was not regulated after the 2008 crisis, that is, what was needed was not learned,” Catarina Martins responded to journalists on the sidelines of a meeting of nurses from private hospitals, in Lisbon, when asked about the problems in some international banks.

The BE, recalled its leader, “has been warning for years” of the need for “strong regulation of the financial system.”

“Not only did this regulation not exist, but new highly speculative sectors, such as cryptocurrencies, also appeared to enter the financial system and create more problems,” he said.

For Catarina Martins, “in addition to understanding how to stop the crisis, it is necessary to regulate because without regulation there are a few who are always earning many millions and then taxpayers always end up paying for the crises.”

In the opinion of the bloc leader, in an international financial system “what happens always has repercussions in all countries”, defending rapid action.

Asked about Sonae’s benefits, Catarina Martins stated that “the government does not seem to believe that there is a price problem in Portugal, which is the fact that food is increasing more than everything else and there is no explanation”.

“And the Government, instead of acting, says that it will create a price observatory. I propose a earnings observatory because perhaps that makes it clear how anyone who goes to the supermarket is being robbed by a sector that is accumulating profits, that will pay out more dividends this year than it did last year. The only thing that contracts are wages. It is unacceptable ”, he continued criticizing.
