The number of sick pay increases 25% in February to 177,000

The number of sickness benefits decreased by 11.9% in February compared to January, but increased by 25.4% compared to the same month last year, up to 177,092, according to Social Security statistics published on Monday.

According to monthly data, In February another 35,925 were on leave compared to the same month of 2022.

In the comparison with January, the month that recorded the highest number in the series that began in 2010, with more than 201,000 people receiving sickness benefits, there was a decrease of 23,988 casualties.

This social benefit was granted to 72,186 men (40.8% of the total) and 104,906 women (59.2% of the total).

The age group from 50 to 59 years was the most representedwith 28.5% of the total, followed by the group from 40 to 49 years (25.9%), in the group of beneficiaries of sickness benefits.

Already taking into account all sickness benefits, in addition to sickness benefit, such as occupational disease benefit, tuberculosis and covid leave, the total quotas were 189,192 in February.

This number of total sickness benefits represents a decrease of 11.7% in the chain (25,131 less beneficiaries) and a decrease of 67.7% (397,075 less) year-on-year.

This variation is explained “by the high number of subsidies granted in the same month by covid-19”, explains the Strategy and Planning Office (GEP) of the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security.

The average value of total sickness benefits was 414.83 euros in February, according to Social Security statistics.

The data also show that in February 2,084,799 old-age pensions were processed, an increase of 1,053 pensions processed compared to January and a growth of 0.9% (17,623 more) in the same comparison. In the total old-age pensions, women represented 52.9% and men 47.1%.
