The government bill that temporarily eliminates VAT on 44 food products was approved in general terms in Parliament, with the votes in favor of PS, Chega and Iniciativa Liberal and the abstentions of PSD, PCP, Bloco de Esquerda, PAN and Free. In other words, no party force voted against it.
According to the vote carried out this Friday, the proposal was approved, now moving on to the discussion in the field of the specialty. The parties may also submit proposals to modify the diploma.
The Government has asked to speed up the procedures for approval of the measure in Parliament so that it quickly reaches the President of the Republic so that it can be promulgated and will remain in force during the month of April. The retailer will have 15 days to set the new prices, resulting from the VAT reduction, from the publication of the law in the Diário da República.
There are 44 products already selected that will have zero VAT for six months.

The Government explained that the list of products resulted from the crossing of two other lists: one from the Ministry of Health (which had 96 products) with products considered healthy and another from APED with the best-selling products.
