Ryanair and Repsol agree to supply sustainable fuel to airports in Portugal and Spain

Ryanair and Repsol signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday for the supply of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to the airline’s airports in Spain and Portugal.

The agreement between both companies comes with the goal of achieving zero emission targets of the Irish airline and guarantees the supply of 155,000 tons of SAF by Repsol to Ryanair between 2025 and 2030.

This amount, equivalent to 28,000 flights between Dublin and Madrid, according to the airline, will allow “avoiding the emission of some 490,000 tons of carbon dioxide.”

“While SAF is an essential element for the decarbonisation of aviation, it only represents a small fraction of the total aviation fuel used worldwide,” the two companies say in a joint statement.

Ryanair wants this type of fuel to represent 12.5% of the total that it will use in 2030 and wants to achieve emissions neutrality in 2050.

“Achieving these objectives requires multiple production methods and, at Repsol, we are looking for various solutions,” says Ryanair’s CEO, Eddie Wilson, quoted in the document, where he explains that this agreement will guarantee about 15% of the closest target.

The head of Repsol Valero Marin, quoted in the statement, welcomed the agreement with Ryanair and defended the importance of sustainable aviation fuel solutions.

“The aviation sector needs solutions like AFS to sustain the current decarbonization process,” he said, welcoming the “consolidation” Repsol’s position as a “multi-energy” company with the goal of reaching zero emissions by 2050.
