Lagarde defends strengthening economic ties between Mediterranean countries

The president of the European Central Bank (ECB), Christine Lagarde, defended this Thursday a reinforcement of economic ties between the different Mediterranean countries as a way to improve energy security and boost opportunities on the southern coast.

Speaking at the “Mediterranean Meetings,” an event that took place in Marseille, Lagarde lamented that, despite sharing a common history, Mediterranean countries now have “low levels of commercial and cultural exchange.”

Christine Lagarde argued that one of the ways to strengthen ties is to take advantage of the potential of the Mediterranean to advance the ecological transition: first by establishing a link in gas and in the future with solar and wind energy.

This would bring energy security to the northern coast of the Mediterranean and at the same time promote growth and inclusion on the southern coast,” he highlighted.
