Unemployment falls year-on-year and quarterly to 6.5% in March, reports the INE

The unemployment rate stood at 6.5% in March, 0.3 percentage points less year-on-year and 0.1 percentage points less than in February, according to the provisional estimate presented this Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

“The unemployment rate stands at 6.5%, 0.1 percentage points less than the previous monthequal to that of three months before and 0.3 percentage points lower than that of the same month in 2023,” states the INE in the “Monthly Estimates of Employment and Unemployment” for March.

That month there was 346,500 unemployed, 1.6% less than in February and 3.9% less than in March 2023maintaining the value compared to December of last year.

The youth unemployment rate, which covers people between 16 and 24 years old, with seasonally adjusted values, was 22.3% in March of this year, compared to 19.5% in the same month of 2023 and 22.4% % of the previous month.

The INE estimate also indicates that the employed population increased by 2.0% compared to March 2023 and 0.2% overall (compared to February 2024), up to 5,013.9 thousand people.

The inactive population will have been 2,438.7 thousand, 1.3% more than a year beforebut 0.1% below February.

The labor underutilization rate, which includes the unemployed population, the underemployment of part-time workers, the inactive who are looking for work but not available and the inactive available but not looking for work, was located at 11.4%, an identical value. to February. 2024 and lower than in March 2023 (0.6 percentage points).

The INE also published the final statistics for February 2024, having revised the estimated rate downwards, which was 6.7%, to 6.6%.

Thus, the unemployment rate in February was 0.1 percentage points higher than that of the previous month and three months earlier, but 0.3 percentage points lower than that of the previous year.
