Lisbon prison guards on strike for 30 days

Guards at the Lisbon prison (EPL) began a 30-day strike on Wednesday, after an identical strike began on Tuesday at the Linhó prison (Sintra).

The strike at the EPL, which began at 00:00 hours this Wednesday and will last until 23:59 hours on July 31,is against the catastrophic closure process”from that prison (decided by the previous government), “due to the continued lack of security” and the “violation of minimum services during the previous strike,” according to the National Union of Prison Guards (SNCGP).

In both strikes, the president of the SNCGP, Frederico Morais, affirms that the minimum services provided to the inmates will be guaranteed.

The strike in Linhó, between 00:00 on Tuesday and 23:59 on January 31, which on the first day had a participation of 99%, according to the union, is linked to “the continued lack of safety conditions” in that chain, “as demonstrated by the 10 attacks on guards since the beginning of the year“.

Participation on the first day of strike at the Linhó prison was almost total

Frederico Morais explained to Lusa that, despite the general strike that has lasted almost a month, minimum services are safeguarded and prisoners remain locked in their cells for 22 hours, but can go out for recreation for two hours.

Food, hygiene, health services and all measures related to the freedom and rights of prisoners, such as access to court and coercive measures, as well as consultations abroad, provided they are accredited, will also be guaranteed.
