Portugal has already asked Brussels for money from the fifth PRR cheque. 2.9 billion is expected

The request to the European Commission to pass the fifth control of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) has already been made. According to a statement from the Ministry of Territorial Cohesion, “Portugal presented today [quarta-feira] to the European Commission the 5th payment request of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), for an amount of 2.9 billion eurosdistributed in 1.65 billion euros in grants and 1.25 billion euros in loans.”

Portugal will now be assessed by Brussels to verify compliance with 27 milestones and 15 objectives. “After assessing the request, the European Commission will send to the Economic and Financial Committee its preliminary assessment of compliance with the milestones and objectives required of Portugal for this payment,” explains the Ministry headed by Castro Almeida.

This is 2.9 billion euros (net, of which 3.2 billion come from advances) and represents the largest cheque to date.

Castro Almeida had already expressed his intention to submit the application to Brussels in July and thus compensate for the delay in this reimbursement. He hopes to have the sixth in the autumn and then, he recently declared, “we will be up to date with the PRR, which expects the sixth to be submitted in 2024. At that time we will be on time, and at that time we will stop talking about delays, in accordance with the planned schedules.”

Government says it will have to resort to the State Budget to comply with the PRR

The request for the fifth payment has been left hanging. One of the essential certificates for receiving this cheque is the one for the reform of public administration, which came into effect on Wednesday. And the certificate that aims to boost the capital market, which came into effect on 29 June.
