“I’m pretty sure they’re not with us anymore,” said the mother-in-law of the missing Amazon.

A protest in Copacabana Beach, south of Rio de Janeiro, brought together the family and friends of Brazilian native Bruno Pereira and British journalist Dom Phillips, who went missing a week ago in Vale do Javari in Amazonas, this Sunday (12).

The Englishman is married to Brazilian Alessandra Sampaio, with whom he lives in Salvador. Phillips’ mother-in-law, Lúcia Farias Sampaio, brother-in-law, Marcos Faria Sampaio, and city-dwelling father, Luiz Carlos Sampaio, went to the show to find out the whereabouts of the disappeared.

Moving, Lúcia showed pessimism about the meeting between her son-in-law and the native.

“It was utter despair when we found out. There is great hope that they are lost in the woods. It is almost certain that they are no longer with us today. My daughter is suffering like crazy in Salvador. Their lives were turned upside down because they had wasted dreams. They were soul mates,” said the British mother-in-law.

Marcos stated that despite the painful moment, the family relied on faith to wait for information about the missing.

“We have to be realistic. Although we are a very religious, God-fearing family, we trust the last hope. We have to believe until we find a definitive answer. We believe, but despite our faith, we expect the worst,” said Marcos.

Phillips’ father-in-law showed the family’s admiration for the journalist and her son-in-law.

“He’s an amazing man, there are no words to describe who Dom is. An extraordinary figure. I’m still hoping to find it. I have almost complete faith that I will find him. Only time will tell. I pray to God that our struggle will not be in vain and that his good behavior will be seen by the whole world,” he hopes for his father-in-law.

Marcos argued that the action, in which representatives of the National Indian Foundation (Funai) had a total of about a hundred demonstrators, was not of a political nature. He said the family is grateful to everyone involved in the search efforts on Amazon.

According to Marcos, the journalist’s family was in contact with federal government agencies and his sister is receiving diplomatic assistance from the United Kingdom. But he complains about only getting the information through the press.

“Everything is very sad and the siege is starting to close. We follow everything from the press and we have information thanks to you. We continue to get on all the cars to see the ones that came out and the ones that didn’t, and it’s very sad, really sad,” he concluded.
