The Circular Festival of Performing Arts returns to Vila do Conde on the 17th

The Performing Arts Festival returns to Vila do Conde on the 17th, at a crossroads that encompasses dance, music, theater, performance, thought and cinema, the organization announced.

Speaking to Lusa, the artistic director of Circular, Dina Magalhães, said that this 18th edition, which will take place between September 17 and 24, will include “a diverse interdisciplinary program, with various themes addressed in each work, in different disciplines. . artistic”.

“We seek, above all, in this diversity, coherence and critical involvement of the groups. Regardless of the disciplinary area of ​​each work, we are interested in the reading that each one does, of the times we live in, in the present condition”, she stressed.

With this objective in mind, the festival proposes “shows that question, question and convene in less conventional approaches and languages ​​and in unusual formats, where [se procura] reach different audiences with different interests. The objective is to make these crossings between the public and the proposals”, he added.

The artistic director of the festival highlighted that the opening program includes two national premieres: “Zeppelin Bend”, by the Greek choreographer and musical artist Katerina Andreou (September 17, at 9:30 p.m., at the Municipal Theater of Vila do Conde) and “Mascarades”, by the Franco-Cameroonian choreographer Betty Tchomanga (on the same day, at 10:30 p.m., at the Vila do Conde Municipal Auditorium).

“Zeppelin Bend”, whose name derives from a type of knot used to tie down aircraft, is a duet by Greek choreographer and musician Katerina Andreou with Ioanna Paraskevopoulou.

In her first solo, “Mascarades”, the Franco-Cameroonian choreographer Betty Tchomanga embodies “Mami Wata”, goddess of water, figure of the depths of the night, of power and sexuality, and explores this myth through “a energetic jumping dance, object of metamorphosis, jubilation and exaltation, desire and pleasure.

The opening of the Circular takes place, also on September 17, with the inauguration of the exhibition “Sob o Signo do Pneu”, by the artist Gustavo Sumpta, marked with a performative moment, in co-production with Solar – Cinematica Art Gallery.

The exhibition also integrates a performance program, a component that “assumes a strong centrality in the author’s work,” said Dina Magalhães.

The first day of the festival ends at Cacau Bar with a DJ set by Paulo Couto.

On September 18, in collaboration with the Cineclube de Vila do Conde, the film “A body that dances”, by Marco Martins, about the history of the Gulbenkian Ballet, will be presented.

On the 19th, Katerina Andreou will give the workshop “Dance as a game to be taken seriously”, aimed at non-professionals of all ages, prior registration on the festival website.

On the second weekend of the festival, the director and actress Paula Diogo brings the show “Terra Nullius” in audio-tour format to Vila do Conde, on September 22, 23 and 24, with a meeting point at the Municipal Theater of Count’s Village.

Abroad, according to the artistic director of the festival, “the public is invited to tour the city of Vila do Conde, in an audio-tour where narratives intersect, in a very introspective way. The route will start at Azurara beach and end at the Nossa Senhora da Guia pier”.

On September 23, the show “Artificiu” by Inês Campos will take place at the Municipal Theater of Vila do Conde, in which the multidisciplinary artist questions the assumptions of language, time or memory, exploring the symbolic space of the body, the real and unreal.

The program for the 24th includes the performative conference “Lamento do Ciborgue”, by Miguel Bonneville with a reading of the original texts by Isadora Alves.

At 9:30 p.m., the premiere of the concert “Gesto e Síntese” by Diogo Tudela & Supernova Ensemble is scheduled.

The closing of the festival will be in charge of the “multifaceted” musician and visual artist Mike Cooper with the concert “Planet Pacific and Island Gardens”, “an improvisation with his ‘lap steel guitar’, electronics with ambient contours and video produced by himself” .

The festival has several free access activities and the ticket for the shows has a single price of five euros.
