New novel by Salman Rushdie published in Portugal at the end of the year

Salman Rushdie’s new novel, “City of Victory”, will be published in Portugal later this year by Dom Quijote, which will first launch its latest book of essays, “Linguagens da Verdade: Essays 2003-2020”, in February.

“Victory City” is the first work of fiction by British writer Salman Rushdie to be published since he was attacked in August last year as he was starting a conference in Chautauqua, New York. The attack, by a 24-year-old who stabbed him, left Rushdie blind in one eye and with a crippled hand.

This novel will be released internationally on February 7 of this year, by Penguin Random House, and will arrive in Portugal at the end of the year by Dom Quixote, according to what the Leya publishing group informed Lusa.

It is the story of a woman who creates a fantastic empire.but that turns out to be consumed by him over the centuries, according to the synopsis released by the publisher.

After a battle between two forgotten kingdoms in South India in the 14th century, a nine-year-old girl has an encounter with a goddess that will change the course of history.

After witnessing the death of her mother, the grieving Pampa Kampana becomes a vessel for the goddess Parvati, who begins to speak through the girl’s mouth.

Granting her powers beyond Pampa Kampana’s own comprehension, the goddess tells her that she will be instrumental in the rise of a great city called Bisnaga (“City of Victory”), the wonder of the world.

For the next 250 years, the life of Pampa Kampana is deeply intertwined with that of Bisnaga, from her emergence from a sack of magical seeds to her tragic downfall, in the most human way possible: the pride of those in power.

By encouraging Bisnaga and its citizens to exist, Pampa Kampana tries to fulfill the task that Parvati has assigned her: give women equal opportunities in a patriarchal world.

Yet as the years pass, rulers come and go, battles are won and lost, and loyalties shift, the very fabric of Bisnaga becomes an ever more complex tapestry, with Pampa Kampana at its center.

Before the publication of “City of Victory”, Don Quixote will be released in February “Languages of Truth: Essays 2003-2020”Salman Rushdie’s latest set of essays, published in 2021 and still unpublished in Portugal.

These texts offer the author’s analytical look at the evolution of literature and culture, exploring what the work of authors such as Shakespeare, Cervantes, Samuel Beckett, Eudora Welty or Toni Morrison means to him, whether on the page or in person. .

Rushdie also focuses on other themes that are dear to him, such as the union between art and life, but also migration, multiculturalism and censorship.
