The Museum of the Barrio Mundo del Vino de Gaia is renewed with an exhibition of works from the Tate

The Atkinson Museum, located in the World Of Wine (WOW) cultural district, in Vila Nova de Gaia, will host the exhibition “The Dynamic Eye: Beyond Optical and Kinetic Art” by the British Tate in July, as revealed on Tuesday.

In a statement, WOW revealed that the exhibition, currently open in Shanghai, China, will feature more than 100 works of art that will take the visitor to a 20th century art journey.

The show will bring together more than 60 artists from around the world, including Victor Vasarely, Julio le Parc, Frank Stella, Lygia Clark, Alexander Calder, Naum Gabo and Liliane Lijn, Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian, Behjat Sadr, Sue Fuller, Fred Eversley and Gego .

The exact opening date has not yet been revealed, but the exhibition will be on display until October in a museum in the WOW cultural neighborhood, located in the historic area of ​​Vila Nova de Gaia, in the Porto district, which is currently dedicated to fashion and textiles, and that with this exhibition will have a new concept dedicated to international art fairs.

“The new museum will present a diversified program of international interest and with this inaugural exhibition, with the number of works from the Tate traveling to Portugal, it is intended to mark the beginning of an ongoing collaboration with the Tate,” the WOW statement read. . .

The exhibition “The Dynamic Eye: Beyond Optical and Kinetic Art” will include paintings, sculptures, works on paper, films and installations related to optical and kinetic art and will showcase different art movements.

“Artists associated with optical and kinetic art see the visitor not as a passive spectator, but as a an active participant, engaging with art in time and space. The artists combined simple lines, geometric shapes and attractive colors to create optical effects and illusions,” WOW described.

In the information sent to the Lusa agency, it is also described that the exhibition will be organized “in a non-chronological and non-linear way, framed in different global centers, where artists who explore optical and kinetic effects converge.”

Several sections of the show will focus on groups of artists who have chosen to work together, while other areas will reflect on key exhibitions that influenced the development of optical and kinetic art.

Among the works included in the exhibition traveling to Gaia this summer are recent Tate acquisitions such as Otto Piene’s “Light Room (Jena)” (1928-2014) and Wen- Ying Tsai (1928-2013).

The exhibition, which is currently on display in Shanghaiat the Pudong Museum of Art, will also feature a work by Jim Lambie, whose “psychedelic” floors will occupy the museum’s entrance, adds WOW.

The show was conceived by former Tate Modern Curator of International Art, Clara Kim, and is curated by Valentina Ravaglia, Tate Modern’s Head of International Art.
