“In a few decades, we will double the number of speakers.” CPLP praises the Portuguese language as an “extraordinary instrument”

Regarding the commemoration of the World Day of the Portuguese Language, which is celebrated on Friday, the executive secretary of the Lusophone community highlighted the need “in these turbulent days” to celebrate dialogue, understanding, mutual cooperation and the immeasurable value of cultural exchanges.

In a message on the occasion of World Portuguese Language Day, Zacarias Costa refers to the same as an “extraordinary instrument” express hopes, discuss plans, make friends and bring to the world the cultures and aspirations of the countries that make up the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP).

“All this through a common language, which allows us the rich and free manifestation of the various national aspects that we enjoy in the nine member countries of the CPLP”, he said.

Recalling that the Portuguese language “is currently spoken by around 290 million people, it is expected that, by the end of the century, it will be spoken by 500 million people”, Zacarias Costa stressed that “its use on the Internet is frankly raising” .
