Florida scientist breaks underwater life record

According to the Instagram post, Florida-based scientist Dr. Deep Sea just broke the record for longest underwater life. Deep Sea Doctor or Joe Dituri is a veteran of the US Navy and has spent the last 70+ days living underwater. Dituri plans to spend 100 days in the habitat before finally surfacing.

The experiment is being conducted at Jules’ Undersea Lodge, a steel and glass residence located 30 feet below the water surface of a lagoon in Key Largo, Florida. The house is usually a lodging for paying guests, but was part of Dituri’s efforts to learn more about the effects of prolonged submersion on the human body.

Dituri is more than just a veteran and explorer who tends to spend long days underwater. He’s also a biomedical engineer and experimenting with being the longest living underwater human will also help us learn more about the biomedical effects of such things on humans.

Also, the experiment is helping Ditura educate more people about how underwater life develops and grows. Additionally, this is also just part of Dituri’s ongoing experiments to see how well humans can survive in isolated environments.

According to the Guinness Book of Records, the record for the longest stay underwater was 73 days. However, as of this writing, Dituri has spent more than 73 days and plans to continue his experiment in September by flying a modified aircraft that will allow him to experience zero gravity several times.

All of these experiments will help Dituri learn more about the effects of living in isolation on the human body, and are part of his plans to become a civilian astronaut in 2026, according to his website.
