Martin Scorsese wants to make a new film about Jesus, 35 years after “The Last Temptation of Christ”

The American director Martin Scorsese announced this Saturday that he intends to make a new film about Jesus, 35 years after “The Last Temptation of Christ”, responding to a recent appeal by Pope Francis to artists.

“I responded to the pope’s call to artists in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a script for a film about Jesus, and I am ready to start making it,” the filmmaker told the Jesuit publication La Civiltà Cattollica in Rome.

Throughout his career, Scorsese made films such as “The Color of Money”, “All Good Boys”, “Cape Fear”, “Casino”, “The Age of Innocence”, “Gangs of New York” and the controversial ” The Last Temptation of Christ”, 1988.

This month, in a long interview with the specialized publication Deadline, Scorsese recalled that the purpose of “The Last Temptation of Christ” was to “start a dialogue about something” that he is still very fond of: “the nature – the true nature – of love , which could be god, could be Jesus”.

Pope Francis resumes his schedule after an episode of fever forced him to stop

Based on the book of the same title by Greek Nikos Kazantzakis, the film starred Willem Dafoe and sparked protests and criticism for the way Jesus Christ was portrayed. The filmmaker was received at the Vatican by Pope Francis, who resumed his public activity this Saturday after an episode of fever on Friday that forced him to cancel his schedule.

After this day of rest, Francisco, 86, held several private audiences and the Pentecost mass is scheduled for Sunday in St. Peter’s Basilica.

On Monday, the pontiff is expected to meet with Italian President Sergio Mattarella. Francisco was admitted to the Gemelli Hospital in Rome at the end of March with “acute pneumonia”, as he explained during the return flight from his trip to Hungary. This was the second time that Francisco was hospitalized at the Gemelli. The first took place on July 4, 2021, when he underwent colon surgery and was hospitalized for ten days.

Since then, the Pope has also suffered from a problem with his right knee, which forces him to walk with a cane or a wheelchair, but Francis has assured on several occasions that he does not want to undergo surgery.
