Costa celebrates inauguration of Australia’s new Labor Prime Minister

The Prime Minister, António Costa, greeted on Tuesday the inauguration of Labor Party member Anthony Albenese as head of the Australian Government and highlighted the understanding that the new leader of the Canberra Executive has with Portugal and the Portuguese.

“I congratulate Anthony Albenese on his inauguration as Prime Minister of Australia. I hope that we can continue to develop relations between Portugal and Australia.based on the distribution of positions at a global level and on the understanding that its new prime minister has of Portugal and the Portuguese”, wrote António Costa on the social network. twitter.

Labour’s Anthony Albanese, 59, was sworn in as Australia’s new prime minister at a brief ceremony led by Australia’s Governor-General David Hurley in the capital Canberra.

“As Prime Minister, I want to bring people together and lead a government that is as brave, hard-working and caring as the Australian people.. That work begins today,” Albanese said after the ceremony.

In his victory speech on Sunday, Australia’s new prime minister said he wanted to use his first official trip abroad, to Japan, to “let the world know there is a change of government.”

“There will be some policy changes, particularly around climate change and our engagement with the world on these issues“, he added.

Albanese also promised to make Australia a “superpower” in renewable energy, but did not commit to giving up coal or banning the opening of new mines, a crucial decision for an economy that relies heavily on the sector.

Still without definitive results, the Australian Electoral Commission assigned 75 deputies to Labor on Tuesday -close to the 76 that grant an absolute majority-, compared to about 58 of the conservative Scott Morrison’s coalition.

Some six of the 151 seats that make up the Chamber of Deputies have not yet been assigned. Final results may take a few days due to the complex system of electoral preferences.
