Used by the Governor of California. As violent crime and homicide rates have risen in the Golden State in recent years, Gavin Newsom (D) opened a massive firefight on Tuesday to attack Republicans for gun control at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.
Newsom reacted to the shooting in which an 18-year-old gunman entered the school, killing 19 children and two adults. The criminal was killed by an armed border guard who was nearby and entered the school.
Newsom tweeted:
14 children and a teacher died.
Another shot. And the Republican Party will do nothing about it.
Who are we if we can’t protect our children?
This is avoidable. Our inaction is an option.
NOW we need comprehensive, proper gun security across the country.

We’ve split gun deaths in California since the 1980s.
We’re not going to fix this problem overnight, but let’s stop pretending that these shots are an inevitable horror that we have to deal with on a regular basis.

Despite Newsom’s statements, violent crime, including murder, is thriving in most of the state. The Associated Press reported last year:
Murder rates in California rose 31% last year, making it the deadliest year since 2007, with blacks accounting for about a third of all victims as the nation’s most populous state struggles with coronavirus pandemics and fears of racial injustice, according to published reports. Thursday.
Last year, there were 2,202 homicides, an increase of 523 since 2019, and the same margin rate increased from 4.2 to 5.5 homicides per 100,000 people.
That’s the highest since 2007, when 2,258 people were killed, and the highest since 2008. Blacks make up 6.5% of California’s population, but last year they accounted for 31% of all victims. Hispanics are 45% and 16% white.
California has seen some widespread shooting despite Newsom state’s strict gun control laws.
Some of California’s gun control laws are also unconstitutional. Earlier this month, the liberal Ninth District lifted the ban on the sale of semi-automatic rifles to persons aged 18 to 20 that reload after firing a bullet.
