The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, defended this Wednesday the creation of an “even more attractive” statute for the Armed Forces to attract young people to pursue a military career.
In Braga, during a visit to the 6th Cavalry Regiment, Marcelo stressed that the Armed Forces (AF) “are attractive to the youngest” and that its importance is particularly appreciated by the population in times of war.
“[As Forças Armadas] They are attractive to young people. It is evident that if it is possible to create an even more attractive status at the entrance, the more attractive they will be, ”she said.
For the President, the appeal will increase even more if the military status “follows the priority” that the Government has said that it is necessary to invest in the Armed Forces.
“If the statute follows the priority that the Government has said must be done – and it is not the only one, all European governments say so, all NATO governments – of investing in the Armed Forces, naturally it makes them even more attractive. for the younger ones,” he added.
Marcelo also said that the war in Ukraine helps people better understand “why the Armed Forces are so important”.
“I think that a trend that has begun to take shape in recent times can be accentuated precisely in this time of war. People understand why the Armed Forces are so important,” he added.
At the Braga Cavalry Regiment, Marcelo attended the Armed Forces initiative “Get ready for a day”, with the participation of 4th grade students, who had the opportunity to see and experience the various military equipment.
They were able, in virtual reality, to fly over Portuguese territory in an F-16 and get on a speedboat, while they had the opportunity to take a “real” tour in a Pandur armored vehicle.
To the President, some of the children expressed their desire to join the Armed Forces, expressing special preference for the Navy.
With humor, Marcelo said that he will try to “control” these classes, to “see if they fulfill” what was promised and even some of the students in question will become “military in the future.”
