Paula Rego: PR receives message of condolences from King Philip IV of Spain

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, received a message of condolences from King Felipe VI of Spain for the death of the painter Paula Rego, whom the monarch recalled as “admirable and extraordinary”.

According to a note published this Tuesday on the website of the Presidency of the Republic, in the message King Felipe VI “also conveys his feelings to the family of Paula Rego, as well as to all Portuguese”.

“The President of the Republic received a message of condolences from His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain, on the occasion of the death of the ‘admirable and extraordinary’ painter Paula Rego on June 8”, says the text published on the official website of Belém.

On June 10, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa announced in London, where he was on the occasion of the Portugal Day celebrations, that will posthumously award the painter Paula Rego the Great Collar of the Order of Camõesdistinction that will be formally awarded in Lisbon.

The painter Paula Rego, one of the most acclaimed and internationally awarded Portuguese artists, died on June 8, in London, at the age of 87, and the Government decided that same day to decree a National Day of Mourning, which will coincide with the funeral of the artist.

Born in Lisbon on January 26, 1935 and later settled in London, where she graduated from the Slade School of Art, Paula Rego received, among other distinctions, the Turner Prize, the Grand Cross of the Military Order of Sant’ Iago da Espada of Portugal and the Order of the British Empire.
