Mozambique needs 18.7 billion meticais (about 275 million euros) to cover the next electoral cycle, informed the president of the National Elections Commission (CNE), Carlos Matsinhe.
“This is the general situation regarding the financial needs to manage these elections, the total for the electoral cycle from 2022 to 2025 is 18.7 billion meticais”said Carlos Matsinhe, quoted by the Mozambican Information Agency (AIM).
Of the total, continued the president of the CNE, 3,200 million meticals (47 million euros) will be allocated for the 2022 financial year, 6,700 million meticals (about 100 million euros) for activities in 2023, the year in which the country holds municipal elections, and 8.7 billion meticais (129 million euros) for the 2024 general elections, which should include district elections for the first time, despite uncertainties about their viability recently raised by the head of state, Filipe Nyusi .
Despite admitting the existence of a budget deficit caused by delays in the disbursement of funds from partners due to the impact of Covid-19 and the crisis caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Carlos Matsinhe assured that the CNE will make efforts to comply with the electoral calendar.
“We count on the collaboration and participation of all stakeholders in the electoral process and in all stages from now until the proclamation of the results,” concluded Carlos Matsinhe.
Mozambique begins a new electoral cycle in 2023, with the holding of municipal elections, followed by general elections in 2024 (presidential, legislative, provincial and possibly district).
