Enough of wanting to reduce the electricity bill in proportion to the “perverse profits”

The president of Chega, André Ventura, wants to force companies in the energy sector with “extraordinarily perverse benefits” to reduce consumers’ electricity bills “in the same proportion”, a German-inspired proposal that the party will deliver to parliament .

Speaking to journalists after his closing speech at the parliamentary sessions, which ended this Monday in Setúbal, André Ventura said that, in relation to the discussion on the taxation of extraordinary profits of companies, Chega is “structurally against any new tax in Portugal”but he admitted that the energy sector “has extraordinarily perverse profits given the current circumstances.”

Now, here we had two hypotheses: the hypothesis that the PS and the left want, which is to tax those profits, but then we don’t know how they are going to be channeled. We wanted a direct contribution, that is, these companies, if they have extraordinary profits compared to previous years, are obliged to reduce the invoice in the same proportion, ”he explained.

The Chega leader promised to submit to parliament a proposal “technically well done and studied in the face of the German proposal.”

“Therefore, there is a direct contribution from those who have increased [os lucros] so they will have to lower the bill and thus we have the guarantee that the State will not use our money for purposes that are not these, “he justified.

According to André Ventura, with this solution, the energy companies themselves are obliged to make this reduction in the bill and those who will benefit are the consumers.

“If the money ends up in the hands of the government, I don’t know if it will be spent on our electricity bill or on the payment of advisors from the Ministry of Finance,” he argued.

The text that Chega will deliver to Parliament will be “as complete as possible to avoid discretion on the part of the Government” when it comes to its regulation, promised the party leader, explaining that companies in the energy sector, as soon as this regulation came into force , would “forced to bring this price down if they have an increase in earnings compared to last year”.
