P.S. “The pension formula is not for these times”

Barbosa Ribeiro was a candidate for the Chamber of Porto, for the PS, in the local councils a year ago

The socialist deputy Tiago Barbosa Ribeiro is at the head, for the PS, of the Parliamentary Commission for Work, Social Security and Inclusion and defends the Government in the provision of half pension, refusing to pronounce on what will be from 2023. “It is It is irresponsible that someone can say what the expected increase will be, either in salaries or in pensions, in 2024,” he said in an interview on the Vichyssoise program, on Radio Observador.

The conversation was always that topic, but not only. There was talk of so many cases in such a short time in government, admitting the deputy that there were “situations that for the most part should not have happened.” And he disagrees with the Minister of Economy on the IRC, referring Costa e Silva to what is in the Electoral Program. But he also spoke in Porto, where he is the leader of the PS local council, where he was a candidate in the last local councils and where the president of his choice lives… Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa.

The Government presented the sustainability of Social Security as the main argument for not updating pensions to inflation next year. There are accusations that the math is wrong after all. Is there or is there not a problem of sustainability in Social Security?
I began by referring to the plan that was presented, a plan of the order of 2,400 million euros which, added to the measures already presented since the beginning of the year, corresponds to a package to combat inflation of the order of 4,000 million euros. The opposition has the legitimacy to interpret the facts, but it cannot have its own interpretation of reality. There is no pension cut. We are talking, by 2023, of an increase in pensions that meets the famous increase formula. In 2023, pensioners will not have a penny less than what they would have been entitled to because this year they will have 14 and a half months.
