Italy. League presents motion of censure against von der Leyen

The League said on Friday it would file a no-confidence motion against the European Commission president, alleging that Ursula von der Leyen promised to treat Italy as she did Hungary and Poland, if the right wins the Italian election.

the league group [Movimento pela Europa das Nações e da Liberdade/ENF – direita] in the European Parliament (EP) it will present a motion of censure”, declared the leader of the Matteo Salvini party.

The president of the European Commission (EC), Ursula Von der Leyen, said this Thursday that if the general elections in Italy mark the beginning of an autocratic, nationalist and eurosceptic change, there are “instruments in the European Union (EU), as happened in the cases of Poland and Hungary”, to be applied.

However, von der Leyen added that they are “ready to work with any democratic government” that, in turn, is willing to work with the Commission.

When announcing this Friday the motion of censure against Ursula von der Leyen, Salvini said that the president of the EC made “a sordid threat, an unsolicited invasion of the field.”

You represent all Europeans, your salary is paid by all of us and you were a disgusting and arrogant threat”, Salvini declared.

The EC censured the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Órban, and the Law and Justice party —in power in Poland— for issues related to the rule of law and human rights, imposing sanctions on these countries, demanding that they comply with democratic values of the EU.

The League and the Brothers of Italy (Fdi) party abstained last week in a vote in the European Parliament declaring that Hungary under Orban is no longer a fully functioning democracy, but an autocracy.

Orban is a key ally of the two Italian parties, while Law and Justice is part of the EP’s conservative caucus, chaired by FdI leader Giorgia Meloni, along with Spain’s far-right Vox party.

Giorgia Meloni, who could become Italy’s first female head of government according to polls ahead of Sunday’s general election in the country, has often praised the policies of Órban and his Polish allies.

On Sunday the Italians will vote, not the bureaucrats in Brussels, and if I were the President of the European Commission, I would be [mais] worried about energy bills,” said Salvini.

Meloni assured Italy’s international partners that under his leadership, Italy will respect the positions of the EU and NATO and continue to support Ukraine in its defense against the Russian invasion.

The leader of the Brothers of Italy also expressed Eurosceptic views and conservative positions.
