The Lisbon City Council unanimously approves the “rapid” application of the Social Water Rate

The Lisbon City Council (CML) unanimously approved this Monday a proposal from the Left Bloc (BE) for the rapid application of the social rate for water, sanitation and waste in the city, BE announced Monday.

According to BE in CML, the approved proposal provides for the immediate application of this social rate, increasing “eight times the number of beneficiary families, reaching more than 32,000 needy households”.

The Bloc has also highlighted that the measure will allow an average discount of 10 euros per month for each of these aggregates, “which can reach between 65 and 70% of your annual bill.”

The party hopes that the measure “is added to the package of measures to respond to inflation also already approved at a meeting of the CML.”

The proposal also provides for the creation of a working group to rapidly implement this measure, which will be made up of CML services and must submit a monthly report to all councillors.

In the statement, BE also highlighted that it had submitted an official request to demand to know how the CML will support hundreds of Timorese citizens who arrived in Portugal in recent months and who live on the streets of Lisbon.

In the lawsuit, BE requested clarification from the mayor, Carlos Moedas, about an intervention by the police and elements of the urban hygiene services, on October 4, that had wet homeless citizens of Timor-Leste, in the Martim Moniz, in Lisbon, with hoses washing the streets and removing their belongings.

“If confirmed, it was an action of enormous inhumanity and contempt towards these people,” considered the party council.

In the current legislature (2021-2025), the executive of the Lisbon City Council is made up of seven elected by the “Novos Tempos” coalition (three from the PSD, two from the CDS-PP and two independents), who are the only ones with roles assigned, seven from the “Mais Lisboa” coalition (five from PS, one from Livre and one independent), two from the PCP/PEV coalition (both from PCP) and one from BE.
