The president of the Madeiran parliament is the new representative of Portugal in the European committee of assemblies

The president of the Madeira Legislative Assembly, José Manuel Rodrigues, is the new representative of Portugal in the Standing Committee of the Conference of European Legislative Assemblies (CALRE) in 2023, the regional parliament indicated this Friday.

The president of the Madeiran parliament intends to defend the interests of Portugal before the different European bodies and ensure that the Regional Legislative Assemblies have a greater participation and presence in the European legislative process”, the institution affirms in a statement.

According to the note, José Manuel Rodrigues, who has held the position of president of the regional parliament since 2019 at the direction of the CDS-PP, within the scope of the government coalition with the PSD, was Appointed representative of Portugal in the CALRE commission during the annual plenary session, which took place this Friday in the city of Namur, Belgium.

José Manuel Rodrigues succeeds Luís García, president of the Azores Legislative Assembly, who leaves office this year.

CALRE represents 72 European Regional Legislative Assemblies, which this Friday approved three resolutions to be addressed to the European institutions, in the fields of transitions and social, environmental and digital freedoms.

The annual plenary session ended with the re-election of Jean-Claud Marcourt, President of Wallonia (Belgium), who will continue to chair CALRE in 2023.
