The Interior Minister will be heard in Parliament on alleged racist messages from the police

The Minister of the Interior Administration, José Luís Carneiro, will be heard in parliament on the complaints of messages with racist content and incitement to hatred by elements of the PSP and GNR on social networks. On the contrary, the PS rejected the requests for a parliamentary hearing by the Minister of the Presidency, Maria Vieira da Silva, and the Minister of Infrastructure, Pedro Nuno Santos.

The requests for hearing of José Luís Carneiro presented by the Bloco de Esquerda, PCP, Livre and PAN were unanimously approved this Wednesday by the parliamentary committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees.

The hearing requests came after a report by a Portuguese investigative journalism consortium, which includes journalists, lawyers and academics, reported that nearly 600 members of the PSP and GNR, most of them active, use social media to break the law by writing racist and hateful messages????????

According to the journalistic investigation, more than three thousand publications by GNR soldiers and PSP agents in recent years show that social networks are used for what is prohibited by Law and internal regulations.

Open investigation to investigate the practice of alleged hate crimes by security forces on social networks

After the publication of the journalistic work, the Government announced that the General Inspectorate of Internal Administration (IGAI) will open an investigation into this case. The State Attorney General’s Office has also announced that it has opened an investigation into these publications.

The members of the parliamentary committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees also unanimously approved the hearings of the Inspector General of Internal Administration, Anabela Rodrigues, the General Commander of the GNR, José Santos Correia, and the national director of the PSP, Manuel Magina da Silva, who will be heard on the same topic.

The IGAI hearing was requested by PCP, Livre and PAN, while the hearing requests of the GNR commander and the PSP director were presented by Livre and PAN.

PAN and Livre had also requested a hearing with the representatives of the unions and socio-professional associations of the PSP and GNR, but it was approved to give clarifications in writing to the deputies with Chega and PCP voting against and Iniciativa Liberal abstaining.
