Referendum on euthanasia does not advance. Deputies again reject PSD appeal

It’s the end of the line for the euthanasia referendum, at least for now. The deputies confirmed this Wednesday afternoon the rejection of the appeal of the PSD, which intended to go ahead with the referendum, thus ending the claim of the Social Democrats.

The argument was in charge of the socialist Isabel Moreira, rapporteur of the opinion of this appeal, who spoke out against the request of the PSD to vote on the referendum on euthanasia and which was approved by the PS and IL, with a surprising abstention from the Chega himself. (which caused laughter in the room) and the votes against the PSD, PCP and PAN.

Moreira sided with Augusto Santos Silva, recalling that Chega had already proposed a referendum on the issue, which failed in June, and the Constitution prevents new referendum initiatives on the same issue from being voted on in the same legislative session. The fact that another party now presents the initiative or changes something in the question to be asked in the referendum does not change the substance of the project, he guaranteed.

For the PSD, Paula Cardoso disagreed: she insisted that the proposal is not exactly the same and that the question that would be asked is not the same. “There is no material identity and substance between one initiative and another”, she insisted.
