The ninth double, the 18th Portuguese Cup, the 66th title for Pinto da Costa: FC Porto surpasses Sporting in victories in the highest competition

One was before Pinto da Costa, one was after Pinto da Costa. It’s like that when you look at the trajectory of FC Porto, it’s like that when you look at the reality of national football, it’s like that when you look at a European dimension that the dragons have won. The Portuguese Cup, of course, is not an exception. And the victory achieved by the Blue and Whites against Tondela further reinforced this scenario.

The Cup is synonymous with Jamor, Vitinha is synonymous with love (the chronicle of the Portuguese Cup final)

Before the arrival of the current president to the leadership of Porto, the club had won only four Cups in 1956, 1958, 1968 and 1977, only one more than Boavista, two more than V. Setúbal and Belenenses and six more than the Sporting and 13 for Benfica. Now, in confirmation of a trend that came from 2020, FC Porto once again managed to surpass the lions in the number of Portuguese Cups (18-17) and further reduced the distance for red (26-18). Returning to Pinto da Costa, who has won 66 trophies in 40 years, it was already the 14th title of the competition, five more than Benfica and twice as much as Sporting since 1982.

With what was Sérgio Conceição’s second double for the Dragons in three years, FC Porto also did the double ninth (eighth with Pinto da Costa), now with three more than Sporting and only two more than Benfica. The coach became the first to add more than one double, after the triumphs of Yustrich, Ivic, António Oliveira, Mourinho, Co Adriaanse, Jesualdo Ferreira and Villas-Boas.

At a more global level, there is another curiosity: FC Porto it was an equal title the total of Benfica’s wins between the Championship (37-30), Portuguese Cup (26-18), Super Cups (8-22), League Cups (7-0) and international trophies between Champions, Europa League, Super Cup of Europe and Intercontinental (0-7).

With the second trophy of the season, which is accompanied by the possibility of Sérgio Conceição equaling Artur Jorge and becoming FC Porto’s coach with the most titles in the event of victory at the start of next season with the Super Cup, Pinto da Coast now he has 66 titles in football.

More than a decade later, Pinto da Costa celebrated in Luz (and with light) and already has 65 titles in soccer alone.
