North Korea scans rivers and lakes for viruses, cleans landfills and sewers

North Korea is tracking SARS-CoV-2 in rivers and lakes, promoting the disinfection of landfills and sewers, and monitoring wild animals that may be carriers of the virus, officials said on Friday. average locations.

The state news agency KCNA published this Friday a report informing of the “scrupulous operation” that is being carried out to update the “prophylactic policy” of the State after the detection, on May 12, of SARS-CoV-2 in the country, for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

The news adds that “anti-epidemic poles” were installed in 1,840 points “Intensify the disinfection of pedestrians and vehicles” and that there are another 1,830 “close surveillance” posts for wild animals.

North Korean authorities on Friday reported some 100,460 new cases of people with “fever” (a term used by the regime for suspected cases, due to a lack of testing capacity).

In this way, more than 3.27 million have already contracted the “fever” since the end of April, with 3.03 million already recovered, some 233,090 still under treatment and 69 deaths possibly linked to Covid-19.

The figures that have been published point to a surprisingly rapid expansion of the new coronavirus (13.2% of the national population would already be infected) and unusually low mortality in a country that does not have vaccines.

However, South Korean intelligence services believe that many of these “fevers” could be other illnesses, such as measles or typhoid.

Experts believe that North Korea, which has not administered a single vaccine and has had its borders closed since early 2020, is unwilling to accept COVID-19 vaccine donations.

After registering the first case of Covid-19, North Korea confirms its first death -and 188,000 isolated people with suspicious fever-
