German Chancellor Olaf Schulz has called for equal pay for national team players after the women’s team reached the European Cup final.

“My position on this is clear,” Schultz said after meeting with the German Football Association to discuss the matter. “We talked about how we can continue to help more girls and women enjoy playing football. Wages, of course.” in such tournaments they play a major role in this.

He continued, “That’s why it makes sense to discuss equal pay. I have made a proposal and I am very grateful for your willingness to discuss this issue.”

Germany had their biggest success in a major tournament since 2015, reaching the European Cup final before losing to England at Wembley late last month.

Schultz attended the match and supported the national team, tweeting: “It’s 2022 and men and women should be paid the same. This also applies to sports and especially to national teams.”

Each German player would receive €60,000 ($61,400) if they won the title, and each player would receive €400,000 if the Germans won the European Men’s Cup last summer.

Bernd Neuendorf, president of the German Football Association, said he understands the debate that “the same work and success should have the same value.”

He continued: “I am ready to discuss in our committees whether our wage system is modern or whether it should be changed.”
Women’s coach Martina Voss-Tecklenbag has suggested that international footballers’ wages could be equalized by paying more women and less men.
