South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer is on Saturday at the IX. He apologized to a group of female athletes who were on the field for the title ceremony, but Beamer said he was not told.
According to Beamer, he was seen waving and shouting at a woman to get off the court as he prepared to return to the game right after a TV break.
But women don’t just wander around aimlessly. They were invited to the field for the Title IX ceremony between landings.
Beamer said he was not told there would be such a ceremony and apologized if he offended the women who were there for an official purpose.
“I apologize to everyone I hurt,” Beamer told reporters on Sunday, according to ESPN.
Coach told what happened from his point of view.
“We’re sending our attack there to make it work,” Beamer cried. “They’re on the offensive line. Georgia can see which formation we have. We did as we were told and we didn’t get the ball. I looked at the end and I understood why. My first reaction was to yell, ‘Get off the pitch.’ I have no idea who’s downstairs.
“I hope people know me well enough to know what kind of advocate I am for women’s sports,” Beamer said. “I have two daughters who play sports. I compete in as many women’s sports as possible in the Carolinas because I believe in and support them, and anyone who thinks otherwise probably doesn’t know me.”
On Saturday, South Carolina football player Gillissa Harris took to Twitter to criticize Beamer for the incident, posting a video of Beamer yelling at them and appearing confused.
The video shows that there were not a few women, but more than a dozen.
“All female student-athletes are ~requested~ to come to the game to celebrate Title IX’s 50th anniversary. We stayed on the field for 15 seconds, then we shouted to get out. If you want to pay tribute to female student-athletes, do this, not that,” Harris wrote.

Harris also criticized the school for its misguided plan to honor women.
“If you want to ‘honor’ female student athletes, it’s easy. Then you have to put real effort into it. Don’t do anything just to tick a box,” she tweeted.

But Harris also praised Beamer’s coaching. “But Coach Beamer coached in the heat of the game and did nothing more than support women’s sports,” she wrote.
Very well said! As you said, there is so much more to do! However, Coach Beamer coached in the heat of the match and supported women’s sport. https://t.co/zz85cw1VDt

The game was messy in more ways than one for South Carolina as the Georgia Bulldogs won 48-7.
