Maria Caputi makes history in Italy by refereeing Sassuolo-Salernitana on Sunday

Maria Ferrieri Caputi will go down in Italian football history when she becomes the first woman to referee a Serie A match on Sunday, the match between Sassuolo and Salernitana, on matchday eight.

The 31-year-old “judge”, from Livorno, had already managed a team from the main transalpine division, Cagliari, but in a Coppa Italia match with Cittadella, and last season she refereed several Serie C matches ( 3rd division).

On July 1, Maria Ferrieri Caputi was promoted to the highest level of the transalpine refereeing body through the referees’ association: by being part of its national committee, she was able to command matches in the first division.

“It is a dream come true, a historic moment, María Sole was promoted because she deserves“, rejoiced, at the time, the president of the Italian Association of Referees (AIA), Alfredo Trentalange, after revealing the list of “judges” for the 2022/23 season.

Female referees are increasingly integrated into men’s football matches, and in May FIFA reinforced this trend by announcing that Six women have been called up for the 2022 Qatar World Cupwhich takes place between November 21 and December 18, including France’s Stéphanie Frappart, the first to referee a Ligue 1 match, in 2019.
