All peninsular and Azores districts under yellow warning for rain

All the districts of continental Portugal and the western and central groups of the Azores are under yellow alert this Monday due to the forecast of occasionally intense rains and accompanied by electrical storms and strong gusts, according to the IPMA.

According to the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA), most of the continent’s districts will be under yellow alert until this Tuesday, with the exception of Viseu, Bragança, Porto, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga, where it will be in force. until Wednesday.

The Western (Flores and Corvo) and Central (São Jorge, Terceira, Faial, Pico and Graciosa) groups of the Azores are also under yellow notice until 9:00 p.m. this Monday. The yellow warning is issued by the IPMA whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the weather situation.

According to the IPMA, the origin of these warnings are “the squall lines” associated with extratropical cyclone Danielle, which will cause sometimes intense rainfall and accompanied by electrical storms and strong gusts of wind, on the west coast, gradually evolving towards the east.

This rainfall scenario is expected to continue throughout the week, albeit with smaller amounts of precipitation accumulated as of Wednesday.

On Sunday, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority issued a warning to the population due to the gradual change in weather conditions, with heavy rains and strong winds.

The authorities expect “rains, sometimes intense, accompanied by electrical storms” and the possibility of significant accumulations of water “in short periods and gusts of convective origin, especially in the North and Center regions and between the districts of Lisbon and Setúbal” .

In coastal areas, “a swell from the West/Northwest is expected, during this Monday with a significant height of up to 3.5 meters, especially on the west coast of the South region”, on the night of September 12 to 13.

Civil Protection warns that “special attention should be paid to areas historically identified as vulnerable to flooding and in particular in unregulated and fast-flowing hydrographic basins.”

To prevent accidents, the population is asked to pay special attention to structures that could come loose with the wind, to the possibility of falling trees and to be careful when traveling and staying on the coast and riverside areas.

Civil Protection also calls for the unblocking of rainwater drainage systems and the adoption of defensive driving on the roads due to the formation of water tables and the “possible accumulation of snow” in some areas.
