Report: Former Patreon employee says company ignores child abuse content to protect ‘minors’

A GlassDoor review allegedly left by a former Patreon employee says the company has instructed members of its trust and security group to screen for pedophile content and protect “people with an interest in minors.”

Reduxx reports that a former Patreon employee claimed in a recent GlassDoor review that members of the company’s trust and security team were ignoring pedophilic content on the platform and protecting “minors”. In other words, pedophiles.

Breitbart News reported earlier this month that the company has fired its entire security and privacy team in a widely criticized move, with some creators threatening to remove their content from the platform in protest.

“The changes made this week will not affect our ability to continue to provide a safe and secure platform for our creators and supporters,” Patreon said at the time.

On August 16, a former trust and security expert at Patreon reported on business review platform GlassDoor, describing Patreon’s review as “Illegal”, demonstrating child protection negligence.

The former employee has worked at Patreon for over a year and says company management actively encourages employees to ignore pedophilic content unless ordered by law enforcement.

Former employee wrote:

Management and supervisors specifically told us to REMOVE illegal or reportedly sexually explicit content, including minors, unless the police contacted legal entities or we have a court order.

All concerns were brushed aside when others tried to tell management that accounts selling inappropriate images of children had merged.

The review added that Patreon executives “advocate for small (or MAP) customers,” and concluded, “This is not the way to run a company, this is not the way to allow children to be used on our platform in this way.”

In GlassDoor’s Executive Advice, a former employee wrote, “Let federal law enforcement investigate the company because what we’re doing probably can’t be legal.”

Patreon responded to the allegations on their blog, stating that the allegations were completely unfounded. The blog post states: “Dangerous and conspiratorial misinformation has been circulating on social media lately alleging that Patreon contains child sexual abuse material (CSAM). We want all of our creators and supporters to know that these claims are absolutely false and clearly true.”

The company added two points to refute the claims:

First, let’s be clear: Patreon has zero tolerance for the sexualization of children and teenagers. We are committed to keeping our community safe on all fronts. We expressly prohibit creators from funding content that focuses on non-consensual or illegal sexual topics, and we regularly check creator accounts to make sure authors of adult campaigns are over 18 years old. We work with law enforcement around the world and collaborate with world-class organizations including THORN. , the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), and INHOPE because we are committed to making the internet safer.

Second, the significant responsibility for monitoring illegal content per Patreon’s Community Guidelines rests with our trust and security team, who take this work very seriously. The security organization, by contrast, focuses on keeping things like user data and payment on the platform secure. Recent changes to our security organization are designed to improve our security efforts through our own experience and that of our partners. These significant efforts are completely unrelated to the Trust & Safety team’s charter, which aims to protect the platform from malicious and illegal content.
