The Minister of the Environment and Climate Action, Duarte Cordeiro, defended this Friday that the current fight against climate change is also a fight for sovereignty and freedom, to depend less on the blackmail of certain regimes.

During the inaugural session of the Parque dos Marmelos, one of the main green lungs of the city of Oliveira do Hospital, Duarte Cordeiro stressed that the fight against climate change is also a fight for freedom.

“The more renewable energies we have, the less we depend on gas, on fossil sources, the less we depend on certain regimes that have tried to blackmail us, with their economic action and with the difficulties that they are creating for us, in this case by Europe,” he said.

During his speech, the Minister of the Environment indicated that, given that the fight against climate change is “a fight for quality of life, for the economy and for freedom”, it is very important that the Government knows that the municipalities are on your side.

We will do everything that we can and is within our reach, in the various incentives that we have, in the various policies that we are developing, so that we do not have divisions or incentives in the opposite direction,” he added.

According to the official, only “walking together” will it be possible to achieve better results.

“That is what we are going to try to do: in the area of ​​the jungle, in water and in energy,” he assured.

Regarding the Parque dos Marmelos de Oliveira do Hospital, which was the object of a requalification and revitalization intervention, Duarte Cordeiro highlighted that it allowed the creation of “a true green island”.

“These spaces are vital for healthy cities,” he concluded.

The contract for the requalification and revitalization of Parque dos Marmelos and the Ribeira de Cavalos riverbank amounted to around 800 thousand euros, with financial support from the European Union in the order of 85%.
