The relationship between sudden cardiac arrest and air pollution

Experts from the Duke-NUS Medical College in Singapore have discovered that urban air pollution can cause sudden cardiac arrest in some people who lead normal lives.

The Lancet Public Health reported that researchers analyzed and analyzed data collected in the years 2010-2018 to determine if there was a relationship between cardiac arrest and the concentration of PM2.5 solid particles of 0.001 to 2.5 micrometer in size. The results of previous scientific studies have shown that this class of air particles greatly increases the risk of cardiovascular, respiratory and eye diseases.

Researchers analyzed 18,131 cases of sudden cardiac arrest in this study, with an average age of patients of 65 years. They found that an increase in PM2.5 concentrations of 10 micrograms per cubic meter of air was associated with an increased risk of cardiac arrest over the next two days, which decreased over the next three days.

The researchers also noted that in addition to cardiac arrest outside the home, there is a small chance of cardiac arrest when the defibrillator is ineffective. But they are. They found no possibility for PM10 particles with a diameter of 10 µm or less, as well as O3, NO2 and SO2 gases.

The results of the calculations showed that PM2.5 related to out-of-hospital cardiac arrest can be reduced by eight percent with a reduction in PM2.5 concentration of 1 μg per cubic meter and of 30 percent with a reduction in PM2.5. concentration of three micrograms per cubic meter.

It should be noted that the World Health Organization recommends that by 2021 the annual concentration of aerosols in the atmosphere be reduced from 10 to 5 micrograms per cubic meter for PM2.5 and 20 to 15 micrograms per cubic meter for PM10.
