Western and central Azores groups with yellow warning for heavy rain and wind

The LOLA depression began to affect the Western and Central groups of the Azores, but "the most critical period” is expected on Thursday, reported the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), Ponta Delgada, Azores, April 22, 2021. In a statement, the IPMA delegation of the Azores said that the depression must comply , in the early hours of Thursday, "centered about 300 kilometers north/northeast of Corvo"predicting "a significant increase in wind intensity, with gusts of between 120 and 130 kilometers per hour in the West (Flores and Corvo) and Central (Terceira, Pico, São Jorge, Graciosa and Faial) groups and up to 100 kilometers per hour in the East (São Miguel and Santa María). The islands of the western and central groups of the Azores will be under yellow alert due to the strong rains and winds on Friday, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) reported this Thursday.

On the islands of the western group (Flores and Corvo) the yellow notice will be in force between 03:00 and 12:00 on Friday, the period in which forecasts heavy rain at timesand may be accompanied by thunderstorms and wind (direction from the south, turning to the west).

The IPMA also issued a yellow warning for those two islands of the Azores due to rough seas, between 06:00 and 21:00 on Saturday, with a forecast of northwesterly swells.

In the Central group (Terceira, São Jorge, Pico, Graciosa and Faial) the yellow warning, due to forecasts of rainfall at times intense, may be accompanied by thunderstormswill be in effect between 06:00 and 21:00 on Friday.

The five islands of the Central group will remain under a yellow alert, between 06:00 and 18:00 on Friday, due to the wind (direction from the south, towards the west).

The yellow warning, the least serious of a scale of three, is issued by the IPMA whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the weather situation.
