Lisbon Metropolitan Area with 60% of reported losses due to bad weather

The Lisbon Metropolitan Area registered 60% of the 293 million euros of damage registered as part of the bad weather in mainland Portugal in December and January, which affected 79 municipalities, according to data obtained by Lusa on Friday.

The Government approved this Thursday in the Council of Ministers a resolution that recognizes that the floods caused by the intense and persistent rainfall that occurred in December 2022 in the North, Lisbon, Alentejo and Algarve regions, as well as in January of this year in Alto Minho, constitute “exceptional situations“.

According to the Executive, the bad weather caused damages worth 293 million euros and the volume of aid to be granted is around 185 million euros.

In response to a request for additional data from the Lusa agency, a source from the Ministry of Territorial Cohesion indicated that in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML) losses of the order of 178 million euros (60.7% of the total), in the North region 38 million euros, in Alentejo 62 million euros and in the Algarve four million euros.

In addition to the losses in AML, Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) accounted for around 11.8 million euros in roads and railways under its responsibility, but in the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region.

According to the government, 69 municipalities reported damage related to bad weatheror in December and another 10 with the heavy rains that fell in January, especially in Alto Minho.

In AML, the municipalities that recorded the most losses were Lisbon (38 million euros), Loures (35 million euros), Almada and Oeiras, with 16 million euros each.

In the North, Caminha indicated 6.5 million euros, Valença 4.6 million euros, Ponte da Barca 2 million euros and Viana do Castelo 1.8 million euros. In the Northern Region, IP recorded 12 million euros in damage to roads and railways.

In Alentejo, Fronteira indicated 18 million euros, Avis 8.3 million euros, Pmillion euroszonte de Sor almost 6 million and Campo Maior 4 million euros. Damage to roads and railways amounted to 9.2 million euros.

In the Algarve, Faro reported damages for two million euros and Vila Real de Santo António for 1.6 million.

By areas, the 293 million euros of damages are distributed among municipal equipment and infrastructures (185 million euros), roads and railways (44 million euros), economic activities (27 million euros), environment (10/11 million euros), agriculture (10 million euros), housing (eight million euros), culture (five million euros), civil protection (one million euros) and social security (one million euros).

Regarding the 185 million euros of support that will be granted, a source from the Ministry of Cohesion explained that the amount was divided by Cohesion government areaswith 111 million euros, Infrastructures, through IP, with 43 million euros, and Environment, in terms of cleaning, removing silt and repairing water pipes, with 10 to 11 million euros.

Agriculture contributed with 10 million euros, Culture with five million, Housing with two million, Civil Protection, for damaged equipment and vehicles, with one million, and Social Security with funds for temporary installation subsidies, intended for people who stayed temporarily. homeless.

Since the first floods registered on December 7 and 8, which mainly affected the municipalities of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, the Government has shown itself available to support municipalities affected by bad weather, asking them to assess the damage up to a maximum of January 15.

It rained heavily and persistently again on December 13, affecting the districts of Lisbon, Setúbal, Portalegre and Santarém, and on New Year’s Day, in Alto Minho.
