This Thursday, the President of the Republic promulgated the government diploma on the reform and simplification of environmental licensing, known as “environmental simplex.”
In a note published on the official website of the Presidency, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa justifies the promulgation because it is about “a regime that tries to balance sometimes divergent perceptions about how to ensure environmental protectionwith harmonious and sustainable growth and development, which only practice will show“.
The “environmental simplex” was approved by the Government last December and Eliminates redundant licenses, authorizations, acts and proceduresas reported by the executive in the statement of the Council of Ministers at that time.
Environmental associations criticized the government’s initiative at the time, considering that it could endanger the protection of the environment and be a setback. Environmentalists have warned especially about the end of the Environmental Impact Assessment requirement in some projects and investments.
